Amazon launches Instant Video App for the iPad

Amazon has launched their latest app for Apple’s iPad, Amazon Instant Video which will let you watch videos from Amazon Prime Instant Video on your iPad.

The app will let you stream movies direct to your iPad, and you can also download rented and purchased videos direct to your video library on your iPad.

From the app’s description:

“Watch thousands of titles available from Prime Instant Video at no additional cost with an Amazon Prime membership and over 120,000 videos available from the Amazon Instant Video store by installing the Amazon Instant Video app. Download purchased and rented videos from Your Video Library for offline viewing on airplanes, road trips, or any time a WiFi connection is unavailable.”

Trying out the app this morning, viewing both movies I own and those available through Instant Video streamed through my Prime membership, revealed an easy-to-use app that works quite smoothly.

There is a downside to the app however. Apple’s 30 percent cut of in-app purchases doesn’t sit well with Amazon. As such, you can’t buy movies directly through the Instant Video iPad app, leaving the only option to purchase them through Amazon via a web browser and then returning to the app to view them.

The Amazon Instant Video app is available as a free download, although you will need a subscription to Amazon’s video service to use it, you can find out more at iTunes.
