Apple iPad propels tablet sales to 4.3 million Q3 2010

Apple’s iPad has competition, but that didn’t slow the device’s popularity with it holding a 93 percent market share worldwide according to ABI Research.

In the company’s report, they cite tablets as a “promising new talent,” with shipments reaching 4.5 million units.

“Over time, Apple’s first-to-market iPad advantage will inevitably erode to some extent,” ABI Senior Practice Director Jeff Orr said in a statement, though, for now, Apple continues to be king.

Apple revealed in January that during the first fiscal quarter of 2011, 7.3 million iPads were sold, in addition to many other Apple devices, numbers which propelled Apple to the top of the list concerning Mobile PC sellers.

“Apple is currently benefiting from significant and comprehensive growth from both sectors of the mobile PC spectrum, notebooks and tablet PCs,” DisplaySearch Senior Analyst Richard Shim said in the report, noting that cannibalization of the former by the latter was for now limited.

In ABI’s report, the also discuss e-readers and netbooks, stating:

“The U.S. continues to be the leading market for e-book readers,” ABI’s Orr said in the statement, “and the three top vendors, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Sony, are comfortably maintaining their top positions in it.”

Netbooks on the other hand are not fairing as well when compared to tablets and e-readers.

Tablet sales show no signs of slowing down, Morgan Stanley raised its forecast for 2012 tablet sales to 100 million units, and with iPad 2 coming next week, it’s likely that the iPad will continue its market dominance for some time.

Do you agree that iPad will continue to lead the way in tablet sales?  What, if any, competition to the iPad do you consider a threat?

If only Apple would start to open up. Flash is the most prominent example, fights with publishers is another. Apple acts in a combination of stubborness and greed. This was acceptable as long as Apple would present innovations year after year. But now a powerful line-up of Android-based tablets is coming down the road. These gadgets are no longer far behind Apples iPad and in fact some are technically even more innovative. Apple will have a hard time making a real difference and that will be the moment where the deficiencies are going to become more visible – and the alternatives more desirable. This is going to lead Apple lose their market dominance. If there is someone able to stop Apples success story – it is themselves… they are in fact already on the way. History repeating? In a way, yes. The Macintosh could have been so much more successful if it had been more open at the time…We all know what happened. The company almost died….

I honestly believe their won’t be any competion. Biggest reason is the operating system. IOS has been the brains for all of Apple products from diaper days and thus continues to evolve. Where as the competition changes like the weather and thus you have no continuity. For example, how many times will windows rename and change or look at Android from 2.0 and now Honeycomb. I know folks are going gaga over Xoom but there are already problems. I think Ipad true comepititor might be Hp if it can be consistent and stick with webos no matter how the Touchpad sells.
