Apple’s iPad 3 to feature curved glass screen?

A new report from Digitimes suggests curved glass screens will be a popular trend in mobile devices, with Apple reportedly investing in glass polishing equipment for its suppliers.

According to Digitimes:

“Suppliers of the non-Apple camp are working on products with curved cover glass in attempts to gain a competitive edge in the handheld device market dominated by Apple, sources in the glass industry said.”

The efforts of Apple’s competitors may be for naught however, as Apple itself is also interested in curved glass displays for its iOS devices, iPhones, iPod Touches and possibly the iPad 3:

“But Apple reportedly also has bought glass polishing equipment for its suppliers in preparation for the production of devices fitted with curved cover glass. Lens Technology, Fuji Crystal, G-Tech are said to be major cover glass suppliers of Apple. While Lens and Fuji focus on iPhones, G-Tech supplies mainly for iPad.”

Expected to be released in 2012, the iPad 3 could potentially make use of the new glass similar to that utilized by Samsung in the Nexus S.
