EA CEO: “Apple’s iPad our fastest growing gaming platform”

Gaming is one of many things grand things about Apple’s iPad and iOS gaming is quickly taking the place of using other devices such as the Nintendo 3DS.  Evidence of the rise in gaming prominence by Apple’s iPad comes from Electronic Arts (EA) CEO John Riccitiello, who proclaims Apple’s iPad is the company’s fastest growing gaming platform.

Riccitiello backs up his statements by noting that dedicated gaming consoles have slipped from 80 percent to only 40 percent of the game industry.

Speaking with IndustryGamers, Riccitiello states,

“I would argue that one of the least interesting things about the games industry was that every 5 years you’d see a new console or platform from everybody at about the same time with about the same or similar upgrades or services. You’d sort of harvest it and then it’d cycle back. We got used to it. It’s what seemed normal. But it’s not a particularly smart way to run an industry…”

Concerning the iPad,

“We have a new hardware platform and we’re putting out software every 90 days. Our fastest growing platform is the iPad right now and that didn’t exist 18 months ago.”

The statements echo those of a Flurry Analytics report stating Apple’s share of the US video game software market had grown by 500 percent.

Personally, I love gaming on both the iPad and iPhone, Tetris, Angry Birds and Fruit Ninjas being among some of my favorite game titles.  The cost to purchase these games, combined with the not having to shell out money for a dedicated gaming device is super.

Do you use your iPad for gaming?  Will you purchase a handheld gaming console again, or do Apple devices serve your gaming needs?
