iPad International Release Delayed by One Month

Really?  Yes.  Apple has delayed the international launch of the iPad by one month, citing “surprisingly strong US demand.” Pre-orders have now been postponed until May 10.  From the bold claims Apple made with respect to the high demand they expected prior to the launch, it seems hard to believe that Apple expected to sell less the current estimated sales numbers of 500,000 iPads, and further, be so short in supply of the device that it would push back the international launch.

The entire press release below:

“CUPERTINO, Calif., April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ —

Apple today released the following statement:

Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad™. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.

Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason-the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.

My hope as one that pre-ordered the 3G iPad, in addition to already having 2 WiFi models, I stand with fingers crossed that the 3G version will arrive on schedule, whatever “delivery by the end of April” means.  How disappointed, if at all, are you if you are an international customer or one that pre-ordered the 3G model, that delivery of your iPad has been pushed back and no date of delivery for the 3G model is currently known?

Thank you for your support of the site.

Yes, it does stink, but with the bluetooth keyboard and stand options, you have choices. Hope you get an iPad and enjoy it and the peripherals.

    Jeff.

Jeff. Thanks again for your help.
It sucks that they keyboard dock is not available yet, that is one important thiing i did not know, so i will make sure to find some stores that sell the ones you gave me the links so that my parents can find me one.
Keep it up with the blog, its being really helpfull for us all.
    Take care, nicolas

iPad availability unfortunately is difficult to gauge. I had to call 7 of the 9 area stores in my city to determine if they had the one I was looking for. Stores claim they do not have access to other stores' inventory, which I find hard to believe, but that is what they claim. I would advise calling the stores in NY once your parents arrive and determining which stores have them in stock. Another important point is that they will not hold one for a person, so if you locate a store with stock, your parents would need to go there asap to get one.

As far as accessories, the keyboard dock is not available anywhere at this time. It is still slated for release in May from my understanding. The positive point is that a standard bluetooth wireless Apple keyboard works with the iPad, and if you buy any stand, you can place the iPad in portrait or landscape mode and type accordingly. I purchased the following stand because it is portable, inexpensive, and allows for portrait and landscape placement: http://www.groovystand.com/GroovyStand/iPad_Sta

Further, I purchased a case from a third party. A good resource for any case you could want is: http://thec4universe.blogspot.com/2010/03/apple

Hope that helps. Any other inquiries, let me know and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. Best of luck with getting another iPad and some accessories.

    Jeff.

Jeff. Let me ask you something, whats the availability of ipads and its accesories in the US apple stores right now? My parents are going to NY in two weeks and i wanted to get the leather case and the dock keyboard.
    Do you have any idea?
    Thanks very much!!

iPad has been a decade in the making, so one more month shouldn't matter. People who pay a premium above MSRP are foolish. Show some patience. It's not a vaccine and you won't die without connectivity from your couch. IF you happen to make it to the US prior to the international launch, buy one then.

    Nicolas:

Thank you for your perspective. It is sad that people are having to pay that much to get an iPad outside of the US. Unfortunately that is pure supply and demand. Luckily you did get yours at a reasonable price, and like you, the iPad is slightly better than our reports, but if the iPad is 1A, then our stories have to be 1B. Take care and thanks for reading and commenting!

    Hey man.
First off, i like your blog very much. Not as much as i like my ipad though, which turned out to be the most useful device i have bought in the last few years.
I am from argentina, and just for a coincidence i was in miami beach the day the ipad came out, i was really lucky because i took the last one in the store.
Just so you guys know, some ipads are being sold here (i am sure thats happening in some other countries) at a little more than one thousand dollars on some e-stores similar like ebay. You can take a look at http://www.mercadolibre.com.ar. Just type ipad and see.
Really hope they dont delay the international release that much, because down here people are getting pretty ripped off buying the 16 gb ipad at 1000 dollars.
Take care guys, Nicolas from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Not really. Allow me to explain if I may. Wife (sorry ladies this dweeb's taken) pre-ordered a 16gb WiFi. I pre-ordered the 3g. Lacking a definite date for the 3g release, and needing to use the iPad for reviews, stories and the like, I purchased another 16gb WiFi. When the 3g arrives, the second 16gb will be given to my brother. Paying it forward. Need based purchase, not greed. Could you possibly believe any of my stories and reviews if I didn't have an iPad? Possible, but not probable. Thank you Angry George for your comment!
