MagCloud Gives Power to the Publishers

Magazines are making a comeback thanks to the Apple iPad.  Glamour announced their “biggest issue in 20 years,” thanks to the iPad, Wired has experienced similar success with their iPad magazine and a new offering, previewed on this site, Shelf, is an iPad-only magazine which debuts September 1.

Now two years old, do-it-yourself magazine publishing service MagCloud has launched a new offering which allows any magazine using its platform to become optimized for the iPad with the push of a single button, which can be accessed by the free MagCloud app.

Any print magazine publisher looking to have an iPad presence should immediately investigate MagCloud’s new feature.  According to MagCloud’s blog, the new features offer publishers and users “the flexibility to browse digitally and order a print copy right directly from their iPad. As a publisher you will have the option to choose which magazines and which issues you would like to make available for digital download. Of course, at any time, you will also be able to opt-out any issue from future downloads if you so choose.”

MagCloud creates the same PDF one uploads for a print version, available digitally for the iPad.   The best part?  All magazines for the app are currently free!

Not to temper enthusiasm for that last part, but MagCloud is working on the ability to offer digital issues for sale.  That said, media consumption on the iPad is exploding with new offerings arriving daily.  Add to it this great service from MagCloud, a company which clearly believes that anything should be available and possible in the digital age and who is working to make that happen.

Are you a magazine reader on your iPad?  Are the prices of some too high and do you welcome additional entrants into the magazine publishing sphere, like MagCloud’s partners, which will hopefully drive iPad magazine prices down?

I also use zinio to read magazines, but I have found that it takes too long to download the magazines to read, so I have been reluctant to subscribe. I believe this is the future for magazines…. to have the power of the internet within a magazine… changing ads from mere pictures to full blown video's… it is a very exciting future!

I'm a magazine reader on the iPad – I probably have about 15 subscriptions to various mags. I get them through Zinio, which is great and the prices are competitive with print editions – but I did notice that certain titles are not available. Why can I get the Russian, Mexican and French editions of Glamour – but not the US edition? There are other mags I currently get in paper and would love to get via iPad, but they just aren't available yet. So I hope that this service will get a few more of them into the digital market!
