There is an endless number of children’s storybook apps for the iPad, and adding another to my arsenal on our device always takes some thinking. But when I was asked to review The Pirate Koostoe, I jumped at the chance. It just looked great. Thankfully it lived up to my expectations.
The Pirate Koostoe is not the most “interactive” storybook for kids with movable objects everywhere on every page, but it sure does a great job of animating the elements and telling a great story, and making it interesting as well. This is nice, as sometimes all that interaction really takes away from the story, and in fact would have does so here. The artwork is wonderful, the music is perfect, and the narration (if you choose to use it) is spot on. The app offers a lot in terms of education too. Have young kids and want to introduce them to puzzles? Then Pirate Puzzles for the iPad is actually a really interesting tool for kids to start learning how to complete them, while keeping them interested. The game is obviously pirate themed and it keeps that theme throughout. The game has close to 20 puzzles to do in two different areas on a map. You choose the area you want to start from on the map and then are presented with a menu of locked puzzles that are unlocked as you progress through each one. The puzzles skill levels are broken down by row. The top row being the easiest and the bottom row being a bit harder. This is done by adding more puzzle pieces to the mix. Read on…
