Review : iRig MIC Cast

Any long-time reader of The iPad Fan knows that I am a huge fan of IK Multimeida and their various products geared towards musicians and audio-junkies. The latest to pop up is the iRig MIC Cast. I of course had to give it a test!
The idea behind the iRig MIC Cast is to allow users to always have a great mic available for recording a voice memo, a podcast, speeches, or broadcast, at a whim, and with extremely great results.
The iRig MIC Cast (39.99) is a very small, pocket-sized mic with a unidirectional pickup that minimizes background noise and that annoying hiss you sometimes get when only recording with the built-in mic. Overall I was extremely impressed with the iRig MIC Cast, and will be using it to record meetings, for sending them over to Evernote along with my writing notes.
As an added bonus IK multimedia includes an iPhone stand that allows one to really position the mic for the best results possible. I find using the iPhone with the iRig MIC Cast for recording meetings and the iPad for taking notes while doing so, is an amazingly productive solution, and am excited to see how it changes things for me on a personal level, as well as a professional one. It even makes FaceTime and Skype calls better by providing a much clearer sound for the other party…now you just have to hope the person you call has the iRig MIC Cast too!
The iRig MIC Cast fits into the headphone jack on the iPhone or iPad, but also has a monitoring jack for headphones, so it allows one to monitor what’s being recorded in real-time…which is very nice I have to say. To top it off the mic fits into the iPhone even when in a case or with a bumper…something many accessory makers neglect to take into account.
There are two free apps one can use from IK multimedia, the iRig Recorder and VocaLive. Both are great free apps for quality voice or vocal recording and processing.
Overall I have been impressed with the results and uses of the iRig MIC Cast and recommend it to anyone who uses their device for recording meetings with clients or perhaps dictation of notes for later use, or simply those who want to provide better audio on a FaceTime call.
