Review : River of News for iPad
It seems like every other day someone is releasing an app for the iPad that will change RSS feed reading. Some do, most don’t. It also seems that every time one comes out I have to get it and review it. I do. I love news, and anyone who comes to this site knows it. I can’t help it! So when something comes along that looks to make it better or easier to read my feeds on the iPad, I pounce on it! Such is the case with River of News ($2.99) for the iPad.
River of News is a very clean looking app, almost looks like it belongs on Mac OS, which syncs with your Google Reader account. When you open the app you log in using your Google account, and off you go. Your feeds are listed on the left, articles on the right. Sounds pretty boring right? Well it’s not flashy by any means, but what it gives users is the best overall Google Reader syncing support in a RSS news reader I have found on the iPad, and does so using a clean interface with just the right features.
So what features does it give you? First, users can sync while scrolling, marking articles as read as you read them instead of having to check them off as a group or individually as you go. Even more users are given two choices for the default font used in stories, and can change the overall size between small, medium, and large. Sharing articles is a breeze! Facebook, Twitter, Instapaper, and more are supported! Lastly you have the option to view your articles either newest first or oldest first, a nice addition to the app options.
There isn’t much more one can say about River of News for the iPad. It’s simple, elegant, clean-looking, and just simply works great. As the iTunes description states, “this is not an app trying to replicate the “dead-tree” feel of reading”, instead it wants your news to come in nice and smooth, flowing upstream, at the glide of a finger.
Overall River of News is my new favorite app for reading feeds from my Google Reader account. And don’t forget, setup is as easy as logging into Google using the app! I use others to keep up with news from my social networks, but when it comes to Google Reader, right now this app has my attention. Check it out.
