I get a ton of requests for children’s storybook app reviews, and that’s great…my kids love helping me and I enjoy reviewing them. Sometimes the apps can start to feel repetitive, but every now and again an app comes along that steals my children away…and off they go with my iPad.

The app that has most recently done this is Ice Cream Monsters by award winning children’s author Erik X. Raj. It many not be the most lengthy story, the most interactive story, or even the most entertaining story (to me), but it is very cute and my kids just love it. They also love the theme song that is apparently written and sung by Mr. Raj as well, who also narrates the entire story.

While I said the app isn’t the most interactive app we’ve tested, it still does provide interaction for kids. They can fly a ship, change the colors or toppings of ice cream monsters, make them laugh, and more. There are tons of sounds effects and the app is very nicely illustrated with kids in mind.

As there should be, there are two options for using the app, “read to me” or “I’ll read it”, and as I said, the narration by Erik is great. Thankfully there are no ads and no in-app purchases, something that just don’t belong in apps for kids at all. As a parent I really appreciate this.

The only thing that I think is a miss with the app is the price. As I said, the story is very short, and at $1.99 most people will pass on it. However, at $.99 it would be a steal.

Overall, if your looking for a cute little storybook app for young kids, that has a good message, and doesn’t try to be too much, Ice Cream Monsters is worth a look.
