Urban Outfitters drops cash registers in favor of Apple’s iPad

Business Insider reports Urban Outfitters “is going all Apple devices for its stores” by equipping salespeople with specialized iPods and dropping cash registers in favor of iPads.
The company’s chief information officer, Calvin Hollinger, speaking with analysts, cites two areas where iPads can make a big impact compared to traditional cash registers: cost and space savings.
Not only that, they “can be turned towards the customer, who can view content, put in personal information [and] use it as a gift registry.” Hollinger said the company just placed its last order for a traditional cash register and will move to the new system “once we make sure this iPad [plan] works.
Evidently, iPads cost about a fifth what the cash registers do, and have far more uses than the larger, clunkier, cash registers.
At this rate, it won’t be long before most stores have replaced their registers with iPads, a very good thing.
